Enjoyment In Your Job

  • By Staff Writers
No matter what type of work you are performing or how many hours a week you work, jobs play a significant role in everyone's life. Some of us spend more hours with work colleagues than we do with our own family and friends! Despite your greatest efforts, your job can have enormous effects on your quality of life, your mood and your overall sense of contentment.

As individuals, we all have distinct personalities and priorities that make us unique. As a result, what we look for in a job and the type of environment we want to work in also varies.

When searching for a new job, you may come across a number of opportunities which require you to perform similar tasks for an equal level of compensation. However the type of environment in which you perform these tasks, the opportunities available to you and the level of expectations held of you, can vary significantly from company to company.

So how do you ensure you get the ultimate enjoyment out of your job? The key is to work in an environment that matches your personality and preferences. Determine what elements of the working experience you find most engaging and find a job that possesses these elements.

For example, if you enjoy challenges and individual recognition, then you may prefer to work at a pharmacy/business where tasks are performed independently. To work in this setting, you would need to be content with:
  • Being responsible for deciding the best way of approaching a new task on your own.
  • Completing work that allows you to build on your area of expertise and is extremely challenging and rewarding.
  • Being offered and sometimes expected to pursue further development and training.
Alternatively, if you value social relationships, then you may be best suited to a position that involves working in a team. To be able to work in such an environment, you would need to:
  • Enjoy performing tasks where your team collectively possesses the skills and knowledge, even though your knowledge base may be quite limited.
  • Posses the patience to work to a schedule that suits everyone's requirements.
  • Understand that your level of empowerment is quite limited and work may not always get done in the best way you think possible.
  • Have fun with your colleagues - work hard to complete a task and then celebrate the success together.
On the other hand, you may simply view work as a way of making a living, but not a life priority. If work is less important than your other responsibilities and interests, then you need a job that:
  • Involves work that is straight forward and well defined so that you can pick up tasks easily and others can take over where needed.
  • Have work arrangements that allow you to balance other responsibilities in life.
  • Allows you to do things based on what interests you.
  • Involves an environment where you are able to have fun.
How do you know if a potential company contains your preferred type of working environment? Analyse job advertisements carefully and look for key words and themes. In interviews, note the overall atmosphere and the personality of the people who already work there. It is definitely worth while asking additional questions to help you determine these factors!
